Our favourite Burmese salads

Our favourite Burmese salads

If you'd like to wow your guests, or perhaps just your own taste buds, here are two of my favourite Burmese salads. The recipes come from the Rangoon Sisters, and where lots of Burmese recipes rely on ingredients which are hard to find in the UK, the below salads are very easy to make with nothing that Tesco can't provide. All you need is a sharp knife. Enjoy!

10 Reasons why Easter is the best festival in our calendars

10 Reasons why Easter is the best festival in our calendars

Number 1 - There is nothing more joyful than daffodils. Put them everywhere. They're £2 in the supermarket, or free from the garden if you're lucky. I put them on the table, in the hall, in every bedroom. Even a tiny jug of them in the bathroom. Pure delight.

A Home for your Herbs

A Home for your Herbs

Coriander is the king of the herbs in Burmese cooking. It goes in everything; Mohinga noodles in the morning, curry for lunch, fish for dinner. So it makes sense that we made a very smart home for our coriander plant at home. It pals up nicely with the parsley, mint, celery perhaps. Always within easy reach and always impossibly chic.

In The Kitchen With: Cat Sarsfield from Since No One Asked

I've been writing words for Kalinko for the past year, but I also spend my weeks and weekends cooking, eating and writing a tri-weekly newsletter called Since No One Asked, where I figure out my feelings through food. Most of the dishes I cook have a strong Asian influence – usually Korean as that's where my beloved mother and ultimate food influencer is from – but I love food from the entire Asian diaspora. These are three meals that are super quick to whip up, feel like a hug in a bowl (my only aim when I'm cooking and eating) and use up all the cupboard essentials you probably already have in your house.

In The Kitchen With: Rangoon Tea House

The Rangoon Tea House is rightly an institution in Yangon. It opened in 2014 on the busiest drag in downtown Yangon, serving spruced-up street-food inspired by the entire region. From Burmese tea and traditional dishes to Indian dosas and Chinese dim sum, it covers all bases and is always humming from daybreak to long-beyond sunset. I caught up with the owners, Izzy and Htet, a couple of weeks ago at their beautiful new flagship restaurant in Golden Valley, the smartest part of town.
