Lacquerware

Collection: Lacquerware

Lacquerware is an ancient Burmese craft which has been practiced in the same way for centuries in Burma’s historic city of Bagan. It is made using lacquer, a natural sap from the cashew tree.

A small cut is made in the trunk from which a milky white sap drips out. This sap is then applied to a bamboo frame lined with clay, and put into a dark damp cellar for a few days where it slowly cures and comes out rock-hard with a glassy sheen. Each item might have 10 to 15 layers of lacquer before the artisan is satisfied that it is ready.

Our products are inlayed with eggshell or finished with gold leaf.
