Globetrotting: New York

Globetrotting: New York

New York City is a place a lot of us love and know very well. From the Friends’ crew shenanigans at Central Perk Cafe to Carrie watching Mr Big drive away from her apartment for the thousandth time...

But The Big Apple is the gift that keeps on giving, and  there’s always more to discover! Here are some spots you may not have seen:

Arlo Hotels

In true New York fashion, the rooms at the Arlo Hotels are not the biggest, but they’re GREAT little hotels, and the perfect base for your citybreak. They have their own delicious signature scent, a co-working space, a fully stocked rooftop bar, a Dylan’s Candy Bar popup, and free bicycles to use during your stay. They have two locations, one in Soho and one near Madison Square Park.

Bar Kogi

This is niche: it’s a chicken wing thing. Bar Kogi, a Korean Fusion restaurant which specialises in the humble chicken wing. It is filthy and sensational. Go for Happy Hour for the excellent cocktails (order a cucumber margarita), then dig into the main event. Make sure you order the Soy Garlic small wings combo, Crab Leg Bao Buns and Corn Cheese (it’ll blow your mind, believe me). And if you’re having a late one, they serve food till 3am Monday to Saturday. You’re welcome.

Fire Island

The Fire Island. It’s a little out of the city but well worth the trip. Think Montauk or the Hamptons but without the traffic or crowds. Cars are restricted on the island which makes it a lot less crowded than the other options. Get the ferry across from Sayville (which you get to via the Long Island Rail Road from Penn Station). You can go for a hike, cycle around the island or just lollop on the beach. Enjoy!

Lower East Side

Head down to the Lower East Side and wander up and down Ludlow, Essex, Norfolk and Rivington Street. They’re packed with boutiques, shops which are also bars, flower markets and tucked away restaurants. Favourite shops are AssemblyThe Frankie Shop, and Maryam Nassir Zader’s gorgeous showroom.
