Yangon Post
Tactile Tools From The Kitchen
Cooking itself is an entirely sensory pursuit. Certain aromas and tastes can feel so nostalgic, a true Proustian madeleine that transports us back to those food-filled moments. This is our ode to the tactile tools that have been adapted over centuries, that allow us to cut, chop, pour, slice, grind, spread and spoon.
Learn moreA few thoughts on 'home'
Liese Doucet said in her Desert Island Discs last week that “the word ‘home’ is one of the most evocative, the most powerful, the most beautiful words in the English language”. She’s right. It’s all of those things. But it’s also a bit enigmatic.
Learn moreLove Notes: To And From Our Team
Last week we mentioned that we’re in the process of moving warehouses both at home (Yangon) and in Wales (another version of home). You might have seen glimpses of our team, but we wanted to give them a proper reintroduction. So while some may have celebrated Monday’s ode to romance with flowers, chocolate or maybe even a piece of Kalinko furniture (great choice), we’re celebrating – a little belatedly – with some love notes to and from our Kalinko team, who gave us their top picks from the Kalinko shop.
Learn moreWhy Grow?
Two exciting moves are happening this month: into bigger warehouses in both Yangon (our Kalinko home) and Wales (right by Sophie’s family home). That means two really important things: we can a) house more stock and b) offer more work to our makers in Burma.
Learn moreAn Interview with Sophie, Founder of Kalinko
A lot can happen in six years. People change, businesses transform; we move, we adapt, we grow. There have been plenty of shifts over the past couple of years, and happily some new faces in our community. So, as our team grows both here and in Yangon, we thought we’d reintroduce ourselves, starting with an interview with Kalinko founder, Sophie, on what’s been happening behind the scenes.
Learn moreIt's our 5th Birthday!
I love birthdays. Especially other people’s. I love that they make me stop and think about that person, and how great it is that they were born and that I get to have them in my life. We’ve had a run of birthdays in my house recently. In the last few months I’ve made a 1st birthday cake for my second child, and a 2nd birthday cake for my first. In classic British fashion, I masked all the pride and emotion involved in watching them emerge from baby to toddler and toddler to child by scoffing a lot of fondant icing. Today is Kalinko’s 5th birthday, and I’m going to need a whole packet of fondant icing for this one.
Learn moreBuy Once, Buy Well.
We moved house a few weeks ago. I tried to throw away lots of stuff. As instructed by Marie Kondo, I asked every item if it gave me joy. The problem is, the answer was almost always yes...
Learn moreThe A Team have done it again
Three 12 hour shifts, all weekend in the warehouse, and the team have done it: over 3000 items have been unpacked, quality checked and shelved, and we are back in action.
Learn moreThis is not a drill
As you read this, the Kalinko warehouse team are unloading our giant pink container. It creaked up to the door of our little Welsh warehouse at 9am this morning. Anyone who has been following our emails for the past five months will understand quite how momentous this feels. And anyone who hasn't can catch up here. What happens next?
