Luxury isn't always about marble bathrooms, Michelin stars or impossibly high thread counts.
Often it's something much more subtle: the absence of friction. The feeling that everything is exactly where it should be, and every detail has been thought through.
We were lucky enough to work with the team behind Six Senses London at The Whiteley. It reminded us why the very best hotels stay with you long after you've left.
Somebody once said to me that people rarely notice the curtains in a hotel room. They probably won't remember the carpet either, or even the bed. They'll know whether the bed was comfortable, whether the room was spotless, and whether they start to feel calm the moment the door clicks shut behind them.
It's the things they actually interact with that they'll consciously remember. The handwritten note from the housekeeper. The beautiful Japanese mug. The chic Do Not Disturb sign. The unexpectedly elegant shoehorn.
This is where we come in.
We work closely with our hotel clients to create the details that make guests feel good, whether consciously or subconsciously. And let me tell you, the very best hotels care deeply about these things; they iterate, they question, they test samples. They live with the products in the room until they're absolutely sure they've got it right. Everything has to earn its place. Everything has a point.

They care just as much about where those things come from. Not vaguely, but specifically: what it's made of, who made it, why it was made that way. They want the story behind them to be as considered as the guest experience itself.
We love working with clients like this.
Six Senses London at The Whiteley, and the entire team involved in bringing this remarkable hotel to life, is a perfect example. They gave extraordinary attention to every detail, and you can really tell: the rooms are a sanctuary from the bustle of London. They're cool, calm and quiet. Nothing feels accidental or excessive.
We made our signature long shoehorns for them, elegant wooden planters and reclaimed wooden luggage racks designed to fit exactly inside their wardrobes. They chose woven rattan accessories and tiny wooden jewellery boxes for the spa. Every piece was made by hand in Burma by the craftspeople we've worked with for years. They loved that we were able to tell them exactly who had benefited from the work, and what the impact of that was.

There are lots of reasons the world's best hotels are the best. But if you had to put your finger on exactly why they are so good, you might struggle. Of course, the quality of the room service, or how fancy the spa is, or how quickly your water is topped up at the table will factor, but it really comes down to the speed at which you find yourself relaxing. The total absence of friction. The careful choreography of a hundred small details working together to create a precise feeling. Six Senses London at The Whiteley is the perfect example of this in practice, and we're incredibly proud that a small part of that feeling was made in our workshops in Burma.
