Laytu Chin Lady in Traditional Attire Smoking a Pipe, 2005

Print by Jens Uwe Parkitny

Printed on Hahnemühle Bamboo Paper (90% bamboo fibre, 10% cotton)

This photograph was taken on Jens Uwe Parkitny's 14-year long quest for the face-tattooed women of the Chin in the remotest parts of Burma (Myanmar). This life changing journey, which tells an untold story of beauty and belonging, has resulted in one of the world's most beautiful anthropological records.

Jens says: "This iconic portrait of a Laytu Chin women in traditional attire, smoking a pipe, is a rare and one-of-a-kind image. It was taken in road-side village in the hinterland of Rakhine State, an area that has been inaccessible for years now. The original medium is b/w film and I used a white cloth to simulate studio conditions."
