Linda Smoked Glass Mug
£ 12.00
A Mug for Things (*not for hot drinks!)
This mug has a bit of a sad story to tell. It was meant to be a mug (as per its name). And shape-wise, it's a damn-fine mug. Heavy, beautiful smokey colour.
But when we were sampling them, every time we poured boiling water into them, they cracked. The makers tried again with more of the heat-resistant stuff. They cracked again. They tried a third time - they cracked. On about the eighth time, and a lot of broken glasses later, they did it! A non-cracking heat-resistant mug. The Yangon team triumphantly poured boiling water all over them, thrilled that they were surviving, and packed them up into our container ready for you all.
Then as soon as they arrived, we made a brew - the first in our new mugs! A moment of high excitement.
Crack.
It split in half, right across the middle.
We tried another. Same thing happened. Devastating.
Maybe it's because it's cold here, and was boiling hot on the testing day in Yangon. Maybe the tea-test in Yangon wasn't quite hot-enough. Maybe all sorts of things.
But at Kalinko, we never throw anything away (read about our annual Wonky Sale!). And we're also used to things not quite working out as we had planned. That's life.
So please say a big, warm welcome to our beautiful, heavy, delightfully smokey, Mug for Things. Put your bits and bobs in it on your bedside table. Use it as a pen pot, for cotton buds, as a salt cellar, for iced coffee! As a glass with a handle, for snacks! Anything, and everything. Clever little mug.

Love this mug!
So, full transparency, the previous review from March 2022, where I only gave this mug three stars, was me. Unfortunately, it seemed like I got a mug that I got one of the aforementioned mugs that was not meant to get through quality check. What I will say is that Kalinko saw my comment, and immediately got in touch and made it all better! They sent me a second mug which is exactly how I imagined it would be, and like the photos. It is deep and opaque, beautiful, and much more substantial. And whilst I still don't dare put hot drinks in it, I am now using it and it is beautiful. Thank you, Kalinko, for not only a beautiful mug, but for truly excellent customer service.

So glad we could sort this out for you!

Hmmmmm....
...really wanted to love this more. I love Kalinko, and love the story behind this mug. Did buy it even though I read could not put anything hot in it, which was a shame, but happy to use to store pretty earrings. The pros are I love the story and that is hand-blown. The cons, beyond that can't put anything hot in it, is that it is much, much lighter than appears, more a very pale amethyst colour. Also, the handle does not appear very sturdy for a relatively heavy mug. As only using to store jewellery, this isn't an issue, but for anyone wanting to drink out of it, and regularly wash it, it may not hold up long.

Hi there - oh i'm so sorry to hear this. It does look like yours is very pale. We'd love to send you a replacement. We will be in touch by email. The paleness would also suggest that it is rather thin, so a thicker one will help with the strength. They are all handblown, so do vary, but this one certainly looks too thin and shouldn't have made it through our quality checking process. We'll be in touch now to send you a new one!
